Program Overview

The program curriculum meets the requirements for residents to qualify for the ABR Core and Certifying Examinations. During the first 3 years of training, each resident will receive a minimum of 3 months in each of the core subspecialties of radiology: abdominal radiology, mammography/breast imaging, cardiothoracic radiology, musculoskeletal radiology, neuroradiology, pediatric radiology, vascular and interventional radiology, ultrasonography; and 4 months in nuclear medicine.

The final year of training includes some time for residents to pursue electives and engage in scholarly activities. Up to two R4 residents can spend their year in a Nuclear Radiology Fellowship, qualifying them to take the ABR Nuclear Radiology Subspecialty exam via the 16-Month Pathway to Dual Certification in Diagnostic Radiology and Nuclear Radiology. And one R4 resident can spend a year in Interventional Radiology in the Early Specialization in Interventional Radiology (ESIR) training option.

There are 2 teaching conferences per day. The curriculum includes didactic lectures in all subspecialties of radiology, Rad-Path conferences, Resident Grand Rounds, Journal Club conferences, Interesting Case conferences, QA Conferences, Interdisciplinary Conferences, ACR In-Training Exam review, Board Review and Visiting Professor Program. Physics is taught year-round, the curriculum repeating on an annual basis and including modules that teach practical aspects of physics that every radiologist should know and apply in his or her daily practice.

An academic stipend is provided by the Radiology faculty for board examinations, books and external conferences. The Radiology faculty also funds tuition for the ACR DIXT In-training and RadExams, AIRP course, Emergent/Critical Care Imaging SIMulation (Univ FL WIDI program), and subscriptions to Rad Primer, E-Anatomy and MRIOnline. The Residents have access to the Radiology Library (including full Internet access) and the SUNY Upstate Medical University Library.
